If you ever hang out with climbers, it won’t take long before they’re name-dropping the valley, the red, the gunks, the new. Though worthy of adulation, these famous climbing areas are known as much for their crowds as their world-class rock.

One area you won’t hear mentioned is Golden. Yet, maybe you should. 

With 2,000 climbing routes within 15 minutes of downtown, abundant sunshine, year-round climbing options and a plethora of climbing gyms, Golden is quietly a climbing paradise. 

Perhaps it’s why the American Alpine Club and Colorado Mountain Club are both headquartered in downtown Golden? Or why Coors decided to open a brewery there just to serve all the thirsty climbers? 

Either way, whether you’re a Golden local who’s curious about climbing, or an Arc’teryx-wearin’, Magnus Midtbo-watchin’, Sprinter van-drivin’ climber considering a move to Golden, here’s everything you need to know about climbing in Golden. 

Outdoor crags

Golden has two main crags: Clear Creek Canyon and North Table Mountain.

Clear Creek Canyon

Just 10 minutes from downtown Golden, Clear Creek Canyon offers more than a thousand climbing routes in a beautiful mountain setting. The routes are mostly single-pitch sport climbs, along with a selection of multi-pitch, trad and boulders. 

The rock varies from gneiss and schist to granite. On nice-weather weekends, the canyon can feel crowded. But thankfully the 80+ climbing areas are both accessible and within a short drive of each other, allowing you to easily hunt down an open route. 

As for crag recommendations, here’s what Mountain Project has to say:

While the individual areas here tend to be specialized with regard to the route type and difficulty, the canyon as a whole has a variety of ratings. Beginners should look into the High Wire Crag, Catslab, Little Eiger, Red Slab, and the Canal Zone, while excellent difficult routes abound from the Primo Wall, Wall of the Nineties, Anarchy Wall, The River Wall, and New River formation. Clear Creek also offers nice winter climbing options such as the Red Slab and the Dog House.

North Table Mountain

As I write this post from the Golden Group office in downtown Golden, I’m staring out the window at North Table Mountain. In terms of accessibility, this crag can’t be beat. From the parking lot on Peery Parkway road, just walk up the obvious trail and bam—welcome to Denver’s closest crag. 

The climbing ain’t bad either. Though most routes are short (less than 60-feet) and polished (did I mention it’s Denver’s closest crag?), there’s a nice range of accessible sport climbs and top-rope routes for beginners and intermediates alike. 

The best part about North Table Mountain? The sunshine. Ahhh, the warm, glorious, neverending sunshine. As a south-facing crag high on a mesa, North Table gets drenched in sun, making it the best winter crag in the front range.

Burned through the 1,700 routes above? Don’t move to Rifle just yet. Golden has a few more tricks up its sleeve.

Indoor climbing

Even with all the primo outdoor climbing in Golden, let’s face it: sometimes you can’t be bothered to brave the elements or fight the rattlesnakes outside. We get it. For these times, you have Earth Treks.

Located on Golden Ridge Road in Golden, Earth Treks is a 28,500 square-foot mecca of indoor climbing and bouldering. I can’t praise this gym enough: The community is warm and welcoming. The fitness and yoga classes are excellent. Plus it has clean bathrooms, nice equipment, friendly staff, a gear shop, parties—everything you could want in a climbing gym.  

Things are a bit weird now with COVID. As of February, many of the amenities are still unavailable. Right now, you need a reservation to climb, and reservations are only available during most times to members and punch card holders. With any luck, however, things will return to normal soon, and everyone should check out this world-class climbing gym!

Other climbing gyms near Golden

Golden is fortunate to have an abundance of climbing gyms within striking distance. No kidding. While most cities in America have only a handful of gyms (if any), my latest count on Google Maps shows 20 climbing gyms within a 30-minute drive of Golden.

Just when you thought Golden couldn’t get any cooler, you’re now privy to one of the most underrated climbing areas in Colorado. 

Just don’t tell those climber bros at the party… 

Drinking al fresco isn’t normally a winter activity in Golden. But with level red restrictions back in place, Golden bars and restaurants are now closed for indoor dining. This means if you want that smoky old fashioned, you’re going to have to find somewhere outside to drink it.

Enter: the heated patio.

With temperatures plummeting, boozing outside next to a heater can be the difference between chill vibes and hypothermia. Okay, maybe that’s a slight exaggeration, but heaters can make a big difference on a cold night, especially for teetotalers and little ones.

In a perfect world, every Golden patio is warm and toasty for your next happy hour. But the reality is much different. In propane heaters are the new toilet paper, Fast Company shares how demand for fire pits and outdoor heaters have skyrocketed, leaving some businesses struggling to obtain these items at a time when they’re already on thin ice financially.  

Lucky for us, some Golden bars and restaurants have stocked up on heaters to provide a comfy outdoor experience. Here’s where to drink outside in Golden today.

Pandemic or not, you can’t go wrong with New Terrain. The beer is delicious, the staff is friendly, and now with dozens of heated outdoor tables and private firepits, New Terrain is your best bet for drinking craft beer al fresco this winter.

Another good bet for comfy outdoor drinks is Buffalo Rose. Taken from their Google profile on Nov. 24: “We remain open for cozy dining outdoors. We have radiant heaters, fire and lots of wind breaks. Wear layers, bring a blanket and enjoy our spaces and company for dinner or drinks!” Make your first order a Prospector: a shot of whisky with a Coors chaser.

Tributary makes outdoor drinking in winter not only tolerable but delightful! Golden first food hall now has five igloos, which are “clean, heated, comfy—and hold six people.” Igloos can be reserved by calling (303) 856-7225. Once you’re inside, order a tap cocktail delivered to your igloo and bask in the warm glow of the twinkling lights above.

GCB’s new pergola with table fireboxes is a hot place to grab a cold beer. Although these fireside tables are the Shangri-La of outside boozing, Golden’s second largest brewery also has several tables with propane heaters to keep the stragglers warm. Open 11-8pm daily.

Cast Iron Tavern

If you’re hungry for a snack with your propane-warmed pinot noir, Cast Iron Tavern is a good bet for upscale bar food and a respectable beer and wine list. Their west-facing heated patio gets the last of the sun, but these first-come, first-served heated tables don’t last long. Get there early and be sure to check their hours before you arrive.

For all you Wim Hof types who look down your frozen nose at heated patios, good news—plenty of Golden bars and restaurants remain open to outdoor seating in the cold.

You’ll also find spots with a handful of heaters. Places like Miner’s Saloon and Bridgewater each offer a warm table or two if Tributary’s igloos are taken.

Bottom line: not every Golden restaurant has a heated patio, but every restaurant could use your support right now. So grab a blanket, call your bubble buddies and head out for a drink. We’ll get through this winter one cold-ish beer at a time.  

Ever look up and notice the paragliders floating peacefully around Mount Zion and wonder what that’s all about. Who are those people? How does it work? Is it dangerous?

We’ve pondered the same questions. Which is why we’re profiling Paraglide Tandem to uncover the mystery that is paragliding in Golden.

Who’s flying those things?  

Since 2014, Paraglide Tandem has offered tandem paragliding flights in Golden. “We launch near the M,” says co-owner and pilot David Hach. 

With Paraglide Tandem, you’re paired with an expert pilot so you can sit back and enjoy the flight. No experience is required, and anyone over 18 and under 225 pounds can fly. 

“All instructors are highly trained and certified by the US Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association,” says Hach. “We only use the most modern, well-maintained equipment, and we carry a backup parachute in the extremely unlikely event of a gear failure or emergency.”

How long is the flight? 

Flights last a minimum of 5 minutes, but usually last 15 minutes or more depending on wind conditions. Paragliders can fly to 10,000 feet or higher while covering huge distances if the conditions are favorable. 

“Our pilots love to fly, and we try to make the flight as long as conditions allow,” says Hach. 

How much does it cost? 

Flights are $225 per person. You can add a $30 photo package or bring your own camera or GoPro to capture the fun.

What’s it like up there?

The most common reaction is that paragliding is surprisingly peaceful. “Paragliding is the closest thing to flying in your dreams,” says Hach. “Because we don’t have an engine, the only noise is the wind in your face. After we run 5-10 steps to take off, you can sit back and enjoy your ‘lawn chair’ in the sky.”

What months do you fly? 

The tandem flying season is late April through October, 7 days a week.

What about safety?

Paraglide Tandem has a perfect safety record with no incidents to date.

In addition to using only expert pilots and modern equipment, Paraglide Tandem monitors the weather carefully and flies only when conditions allow for a safe and enjoyable experience. This occasionally means rescheduling flights if the weather doesn’t cooperate. 

I bet the view is amazing.

Hach says flying high over Lookout Mountain is a unique perspective you can’t get anywhere else. “You can see from the eastern plains, north to the Flatirons, south to Red Rocks, and west all the way to the Continental Divide. There’s no better way to see Golden than from above.”

What else do I need to know?

The day before your flight, Paraglide Tandem will call to confirm your flight time based on weather conditions. Things generally kick off between 9:30–11:00am at the Chimney Gulch Trailhead off highway 6. 

From there, you’ll be transported to the top of Lookout Mountain. Along the way, pilots will share everything you need to know about launching, flying, and landing the paraglider. After filling out some paperwork, there’s a 10-minute hike to the takeoff field and you’re ready to go. 

At the launch area, your instructor will lay out the gear and strap you into your harness. You’ll then do a “practice launch” to simulate what the launch process feels like. Then you hook into the paraglider and go flying! 

Your flight will end back at the Chimney Gulch Trailhead near your vehicle. The entire experience lasts about 90 minutes.

Golden rocks a legit mountain biking scene that attracts both locals and visitors alike. The terrain ranges from arid plateaus to dense forest to technical rock gardens – dishing up a variety of options for riders of all abilities.

The four best trail systems are Apex Park, White Ranch, North Table and Centennial Cone. This post will give you an overview of each park, plus recommended trails and a few other tidbits for planning your next Golden biking adventure.

Just remember: the key to a good day out is courtesy. Golden trails are heavily used – especially on weekends – so be courteous of your fellow trail users, and consider riding with a bell to alert others of your presence.

Trails

Golden has 100+ miles of trails for shredding the brown pow. Whether you’re a beginner or expert, you’ll find plenty to love. Here are the four main trail systems.

Apex Park

Tucked away behind the Golden Ridge neighborhood, Apex Park offers a compact yet diverse trail network with heaps of sick terrain. One minute you’ll be chugging up an exposed hillside with views of Golden and Denver, the next you’ll be ripping down narrow singletrack, dodging boulders and italian greyhounds. If you’re riding between 11:30-1pm on a weekday, listen for yewwwws of Yeti’s legendary lunch ride.

The dirt:

• Trails: 8 trails (4 expert, 3 intermediate, 1 easy)
• Distance: 14 miles of singletrack
• Trailheads:
  • Upper
  • Lower (recommended)
• Best for: Variety of terrain
• Recommended route: Apex Park Tour. Per mtbproject.com, this route incorporates two of the best descending trails in Apex Park: Enchanted Forest and Apex Trail. Both of these trails are subject to direction restrictions (uphill only) on odd numbered days, but when you’re allowed to descend them, they’re a ton of fun.

White Ranch

It’s no surprise that Jeffco’s largest open space contains a huge network of bike trails. What might surprise you, however, is the lack of crowds. The park’s location is largely to credit for the solitude at White Ranch. Riders and hikers who start on the lower trailhead – the one closer to downtown Golden – face a gruelling, 4.5-mile climb up steep and technical gravel to reach the heart of the trail system. This keeps the crowds at bay. A flatter start can be found at the west trailhead, just 20 minutes up the picturesque Golden Gate Canyon road.

The dirt:

• Trails: 11 trails (4 expert, 5 intermediate, 2 beginner)
• Distance: 20 miles of singletrack
• Trailheads:

• Upper (recommended)
• Lower

• Best for: solitude
• Recommended route: White Ranch technical descent tour. Per mtbproject.com: The ride features some of the best singletrack in the front range. Technical drops, switchbacks, rock gardens, and climbs. It’s everything a dirt lover could want.

North Table

Nothing about North Table Mountain Park will blow your mind. But its convenience to town, variety of trails and panoramic views are enough to keep this trail system interesting. Three things to know about North Table: watch out for rattlesnakes, expect crowds at peak times and figure out a way to work New Terrain into your post-ride plans. Cheers! 

The dirt:

• Trails: 14 trails (6 intermediate, 8 easy)
• Distance: 30 miles of singletrack
• Trailhead: Google map
• Best for: Happy hour loops
• Recommended route: North Table loop. Per mtbproject.com: Overall, this is a nice mellow ride that feels somewhat remote, despite being right on the edge of town. There’s a decent amount of climbing, so the ride isn’t trivial, but it’s not technical, and it’s straightforward to follow.

Centennial Cone

It’s easy to fall in love with the cone. The riding is beautiful, fun and straightforward. Aside from a handful of spur trails, riding the cone means circling the 17-mile loop trail, which takes riders through craggy hilltops, fields of wildflowers and thick pine forests. Just note that weekend riding is closed to riders on odd numbered days, and the loop is unrideable January through mid-June because a 3-mile section is closed for elk calving.

The dirt:

• Trails: 7 trails (4 intermediate, 3 easy)
• Distance: 20 miles of singletrack
• Trailheads:

• North
• West
• South (recommended)

• Best for: pretty, flowy, crushable riding
• Recommended ride: Centennial Cone Loop. Per mtbproject.com: Built in 2006, these trails are great examples of modern, purpose-built recreation trails. They are smooth, flowy, and not eroding as most seem to do in the front range. They also take you through great scenery. All the trails on the Centennial Cone Loop are technically easy, but the long climbs and precipitous drop-offs might not be suitable for beginners.

1. How long have you lived in Golden? 

Brian: I moved here from the mean streets of Kansas City 11 years ago.

2. What’s changed the most about Golden between then and now? 

Brian: Lots of changes for the better. More great restaurants. More cultural activities. I definitely miss the early days on the creek before it became oversaturated. But one constant over the years has been the Golden bike cruise … though back in the day kids were nary to be seen and it was a booze fest. Now it’s a family friendly event which has evolved with my life perfectly. 

3. Any tips for Golden homebuyers? 

Brian: Get your financing in order to ensure you’re ready to act. Like a good agent, a good lender is key to giving you a better chance of having your offer accepted. Another tip for couples: make sure you’re both on the same page. If not, the scattershot approach can make finding the perfect home difficult. 

4. Spill the beans: What’s your favorite restaurant and why?

Brian: Right now it’s a tie between Abejas and Bella Colibri. I love the seasonal rotating menu at Abejas, especially the soups at lunch. As for Bella Colibri, Golden hasn’t had a good Italian restaurant for years so Bella has been a breath of fresh air. I love the atmosphere and the homemade meatballs … the sauce is amazing.

5. Any predictions for the Golden housing market this year? 

Brian: It will partly depend on what the national economy does. But even during the recession of 2008, Golden’s housing prices didn’t drop drastically. Our attractions like hiking, biking and sunshine are always in demand.

6. Tell us something we don’t know about Golden.  

Brian: I know a few honey holes around town but I’m good at keeping secrets

7. Favorite trail?

Brian: I like the clear creek trail where it crosses under highway 6 and meanders up the canyon. It’s a nice easy quiet loop.

8. How do you see Golden changing in 5-10 years? 

Brian: My hope is Golden continues to grow in a thoughtful manner … in a way that allows positive change while preserving the unique attributes that make Golden so special – things like the walkability, lack of chain restaurants and small town feel where you can walk down Washington Avenue and say hello to three or four people you know. 

9. Best place for a drink on a hot summer day? 

Brian: I’ll take a refreshing beer at Barrels and Bottles downtown followed by a sunset cocktail looking out at Lookout Mountain from Miners Saloon.

10. What are you most looking forward to doing post-pandemic? 

Brian: Golden bike cruise and tubing the creek.

Debbie: Wow, everything. Great restaurants have come in, tourism has exploded, new home construction has increased yearly and new businesses have thrived. I just hope all the small businesses in Golden can come back from the virus and soon.

3. Any tips for Golden homebuyers? 

Debbie: Don’t let a few thousand dollars make or break a deal. If you love the home, you need to act quickly once you find that special place based on neighborhood, location, sense of peace and amenities. We always recommend keeping emotion out of a home purchase, but we know that’s hard to do. Buyer demand is still strong and interest rates are historically low.

4. Spill the beans: What’s your favorite restaurant and why? 

Debbie: Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza. They have been so awesome during the pandemic. Super friendly and great take-and-bake pizzas and salads.

5. Any predictions for the Golden housing market this year? 

Debbie: I wish I had a crystal ball! The housing market is still hot despite the pandemic. As Brian mentioned, back in the economic downturn of 2008, Golden’s housing market remained steady.

6. Tell us something we don’t know about Golden.  

Debbie: It is sprawling. Think of Golden not just as Golden proper, there are great places to live in the foothills and over in Applewood. Each area is unique. 

7. Favorite trail? 

Debbie: Right outside our home in Golden Gate Canyon.

8. How do you see Golden changing in 5-10 years? 

Debbie: I hope the growth slows down. But Golden is a hot market so I doubt this will happen. 

9. Best place for a drink on a hot summer day? 

Debbie: On the patio at Indulge Wine Bar or my backyard.

10. What are you most looking forward to doing post-pandemic? 

Debbie: Seeing our daughter, son-in-law and grand daughter in Melbourne, Australia or having them here for a visit. Plus, seeing client’s faces without a mask and hugging my friends.

Loveland

Sure, we could talk about Loveland’s free cat skiing, short drive from Golden, easy parking, new high-speed quad, long season (which lasts from October to May), or 400 inches of snow it gets every year – more than any front range or summit county resort. But the real gem at Loveland is the Rathskeller, a legendary apres haunt with cheap beers and chili dogs. “It’s like drinking in your grandma’s basement.”

Echo Mountain

Only 45 minutes from Golden, Echo Mountain is the closest skiing you’ll get on the Gold Pass. The resort has changed identities over the years, going from a terrain park to a private ski racing facility to what it is today: a small and affordable family resort. The terrain is perfect for beginners, which when combined with the short drive and lift-side parking, makes Echo a smart choice for kids. The resort also offers tubing and night skiing.

Ski Cooper

Just 10 miles north of Leadville, Ski Cooper is an uncrowded resort with powder stashes for days. It offers 470 acres of inbound skiing, plus 2,600 acres of open powder bowls and trees, accessible via snowcat. Ski Cooper is best known for its laid back vibe. Expect friendly staff, affordable rates and zero crowds. The mountain just surpassed 200 inches this year so go get those freshies!

Eldora

As Boulder’s closest ski resort, Eldora can get crowded. Like, the mountain is full – go home crowded. Especially on weekends and powder days. But catch Eldora on the right day and you’ll get a relaxed atmosphere with a nice variety of runs. The naturally progressive terrain means the easiest learning terrain is on the east side, with progressively harder terrain as you move west. This makes Eldora a great slope for learners and rippers alike.

Booking a hut in Colorado can be a mystifying experience. Different hut systems. Different reservation systems. Different booking windows. We wouldn’t blame you for scratching your head and choosing that same old campground or Airbnb.

But staying in a backcountry hut can be incredibly rewarding! Imagine yourself deep in the wilderness, cozied up by the fire with family and friends, and swapping wine-fueled stories after an A+ day of backcountry skiing or summiting a remote mountain.  

To help make this fantasy a reality, we’ve scoured the web and gathered some helpful information to demystify the hut booking experience. This post will give you an overview of the hut system, tips on booking and a few recommendations. Get ready for a mega trip!

What to Expect

Colorado is home to 160+ huts and yurts, most of which are extremely popular and difficult to book – especially on winter weekends. The major hut systems are 10th Mountain Division, Summit Huts, Braun and Friends and the San Juan hut system. Colorado.com provides a good breakdown of hut systems by location.

Just reaching these huts can be an adventure. For the 30 huts operated by 10th Mountain Division, the average approach is 6-7 miles, with 2,000 feet of elevation gain. Trails often start above 8,000 feet and pass through avalanche terrain. Good fitness, backcountry experience and navigation skills are a must.

Colorado huts come in all shapes and sizes. Some sleep three and can be booked exclusively. Others sleep 20 and will be shared with multiple groups. Some are new and privately owned. Others are public and 150+ years old. All but Shrine Mountain Inn and Broome Hut are closed spring and fall. None allow dogs.

Amenities also vary hut to hut. Most huts are rustic and provide only basics such as bed platforms, a wood burner and a propane stove for cooking and melting snow. On the flip side, hut-goers at Francie’s Cabin, Janet’s Cabin, Polar Star Inn, Seipel Hut and Shrine Mountain Inn can luxuriate in wood-burning saunas after a big day. How to Book a Hut

Here’s where things get tricky. Due to high demand, the majority of huts are booked by lottery – a tedious process that requires a masters degree in planning. Outside of the lottery, plenty of huts can be booked online or by phone – just don’t expect to score peak nights. And for all you procrastinators out there, beds can even be purchased last minute. Here’s a breakdown.

Reservations Lottery

Your best chance to book a hut in the 10th Mountain Division or Summit Huts – or a number of privately-owned huts – is through the reservations lottery. This year, the lottery form submission period runs now through Feb. 14 for reservations next winter. As long as you enter by Feb. 14, you’re just as likely as anyone else to get the hut and dates of your choosing.  

Huts.org, which administers the lottery, takes it from here: You must be a member of the hut system to enter the lottery, which can be done during the lottery form submission process. Entrants can choose an unlimited number of trip options for next winter. In March, officials draw each and every form and read through each member’s choices, working in order of preference to try and book a trip. If one of the member’s choices are available, we book that trip, charge their credit card for the trip cost, and email the hut trip confirmation letter. Each year we receive more than 2,000 entries and about 85% of entrants receive a trip.

Online and Phone Reservations

No luck in the lottery? You’ve got options. Not every hut spot gets snatched up in the lottery. Starting in April, members can book the remaining spots online or by phone at 970-925-5775. Non-members must wait until the first business day in June.

In addition, Braun and Friends huts – which aren’t included in the lottery – can be reserved online or by phone at 970-925-5775 on the first business day of May starting at 8:00am. San Juan huts can reserved by phone any time of year at 970-626-3033.

Quick aside on summer reservations: Hut demand is significantly less in summer, so if you’re looking to book a hut this summer, head over to huts.org and lock it in now.

Polar Star Inn

Located 20 miles south of Eagle in the scenic Holy Cross Wilderness, the Polar Star Inn is accessible by car, making it a great option for families. Take the kids up the one-mile trail to New York mountain then back for a soak in the sauna. For stronger kids, the trail continues to Nolan Lake (six miles roundtrip from the hut). Ken’s Cabin

With a capacity of three, Ken’s Cabin offers an intimate hut experience for a small family or group of friends. Open Thanksgiving to May, this cool and cozy cabin built in the 1860s sits 10 miles southeast Breckenridge at 11,500 feet. Park at the Boreas Pass trailhead and ski or snowshoe up the gradual 6.5-mile trail to this historic cabin.

Spice it up at Sassafras

On the banks of Clear Creek in downtown Golden, Sassafras American Eatery is a bustling breakfast joint with cowboy-sized portions and a southern flare. Try the unique and popular chicken fried eggs and bison hash. Topped with chili hollandaise and served with jalapeno cornbread, this one-of-a-kind breakfast is sure to start your day with a jolt.

Learn to climb at Earth Treks

Curious about climbing but never tried it? Indoor rock climbing is surging in popularity and Earth Treks in Golden is as good as it gets. Try the one-hour Introduction to Climbing class every Saturday at 10:00am. For $30, you’ll get climbing shoes, a harness and friendly instruction on how to climb independently at the gym. A great introductory climbing experience!

Beer lunch at Buffalo Rose

Don’t let the 3.8 Google rating fool you. The recently renovated Buffalo Rose is a whole new animal, complete with an amazing remodel, cozy ambiance and a fresh menu. Decompress after an exhilarating climbing session with a Hop Valley Bubble Stash IPA. Foodwise, you can’t go wrong with the melty pulled lamb on the brunch menu or the aztec caesar topped with coffee and chili-rubbed sirloin and parmesan. This Golden institution is back and better than ever!

Hit the shops on Washington Ave.

Ride your lunch buzz into the panorama of shops on Washington Ave. Golden Rock Shop is a hidden gem for spiritual rocks and crystals. While Red Wagon Gift and Garden Shop is a cute spot for t-shirts and kids clothes. Finally, mosey up the hill to Bent Gate Mountaineering for your gear fix and Truly BoHotique for a wide selection of reasonably-priced women’s clothes and jewelry.

Recharge at Higher Grounds Cafe

On your five-minute walk back to town, pop in Higher Grounds for a quick pick-me-up. As the highest rated cafe in Golden, this relaxed coffee shop offers no-frills espresso drinks and baked snacks to recharge after a day of shopping. Prices are reasonable but the staff are not – expect silly jokes as they whip up your cinnamon-sprinkled chai latte or hot apple cider.

Take in the Holiday Lights

Sure, Christmas is over, but the holiday lights in downtown Golden are still a sight to behold. Through mid February, you and your family can enjoy the seemingly millions of lights sparkling around town. Start your stroll at the Washington Ave. bridge and walk along the Clear Creek path for the best and brightest.

Get fancy at Abejas

At this point, you’ve earned a nice dinner. Spanish for “bees,” Abejas is a buzzy, special occasion restaurant founded by a pair of Golden locals with a strong community spirit. What’s so good about Abejas? It could be the eclectic, new American menu with fresh seasonal ingredients. Or maybe it’s the unique cocktails and vast wine list. Perhaps it’s just the spot-on service or welcoming atmosphere. With so much upside to Abejas, it’s no wonder many consider it the best restaurant in Golden. Reservations recommended.

Catch a show at Miners Alley Playhouse

A perfect winter day in Golden wouldn’t be complete without evening entertainment. While some will head to Golden Moon Speakeasy for cocktails and live jazz, others will cross the street for a live theater performance at Miners Alley Playhouse. Hit the bar after the curtains close to mingle with the cast and crew.
